It was approximately 3:15AM on the 15th of January, 1978, and Nita Neary was kissing goodnight to her date at the back door of the Chi-Omega Sorority House in Tallahassee, Florida. After saying goodnight, she rushed inside to escape the harsh cold. As she was walking through the communal living room, she heard rushing footsteps coming down the stairs. She stood still and caught a glimpse of a man carrying a large object in his hand. As he opened the door, she got a glance at his face before he fled off into the night. She rushed up the stairs and awoke her roommate, Nancy Dowdy.

The duo went downstairs to check the front door and to lock it. A few moments later, Karen Chandler opened her bedroom door and stumbled out into the hall. As Nancy walked over to offer assistance, assuming she was drunk, she looked into Karen’s room as she was passing. She was horrified to see Kathy Kleiner sitting on the bed, rocking back and forward, with blood covering her hands. The police were called at approximately 3:21AM. Karen had been bludgeoned with a log, breaking her jaw and knocking out several teeth. Her left arm was shattered at the elbow. Kathy too had been bludgeoned with a log, breaking her jaw and lacerating her shoulder.

In another bedroom lay Margaret Bowman, who was already dead, and Lisa Levy, who was fatally injured and clinging onto life. Their bedroom was the scene of an utter bloodbath. Margaret had been bludgeoned with a log and garroted with her own nylon stocking. Lisa was beaten unconscious, strangled, and then savagely bitten on the breast and buttock. In addition, she had been raped with a hair mist bottle. Tragically, Lisa succumbed to her wounds.

The man who had been seen fleeing down the stairs was Ted Bundy. A number of sorority sisters managed to survive one of the world’s most notorious serial killers, some with emotional and physical scars that will last a lifetime. Sadly, two weren’t as lucky. The bite marks left behind would eventually lead to his conviction and execution.
